Hello,
SQL Sentry Explorer (Build 62390) is awesomely useful, and the add-in makes it incredibly convenient.
However, after installing the add-in I have experienced repeated crashes of a previously stable production installation of SSMS.
Has anybody else experienced this kind of thing?
I have not performed an exhaustive test, and it's certainly possible that these crashes may not be caused by the add-in, but uninstalling the add-in seems to make the crashes go away, and re-installing seems to make them reappear.
Event log shows two errors: ----------------------------------------- Faulting application Ssms.exe, version 2007.100.1600.22, time stamp 0x48753da6, faulting module mscorwks.dll, version 2.0.50727.4200, time stamp 0x4a9ee474, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x001073a8, process id 0x%9, application start time 0x%10. ----------------------------------------- .NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.4200 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (73427B3E) (80131506)
----------------------------------------- This is at a site where I have admin privileges, but don't have ownership of the system.

Thanks!

Hi cfeied,
Could you confirm whether the crashes come when actually using the addin, or do they just seem to happen randomly?

Hi Jason,
Thanks for responding.
The crashes do not usually occur when I am using the add-in -- they may occur at any time, but most often when I launch a new query by right-clicking on a table and choosing "select top 1000 rows."
I can't be confident that the add-in is actually the cause of the problem. However, I have at least circumstantial evidence that the add-in is the culprit: I have installed and uninstalled the add-in three times, and I've had more than a dozen crashes with the add-in installed, but have never had a crash or hang with the add-in uninstalled. This is a production system that I'm told has been stable for 18 months -- nobody has ever seen SSMS crash on it, and this is the first add-in ever installed. There have been no updates or patches applied in at least the 90 days that I've been looking at the system.
Today (while performing minimal queries against a single table with no other activity on the system) I experienced two SSMS crashes in quick succession, followed by a hang with this error message: A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows. Problem signature: Problem Event Name: AppHangB1 Application Name: Ssms.exe Application Version: 2007.100.1600.22 Application Timestamp: 48753da6 Hang Signature: 23bf Hang Type: 256 OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.274.10 Locale ID: 1033 Additional Hang Signature 1: d343e0618ad2a94040826b3aaf1eb7a9 Additional Hang Signature 2: f15c Additional Hang Signature 3: 849dbfd13da85fd2a2db7d64127b65ae Additional Hang Signature 4: 23bf Additional Hang Signature 5: d343e0618ad2a94040826b3aaf1eb7a9 Additional Hang Signature 6: f15c Additional Hang Signature 7: 849dbfd13da85fd2a2db7d64127b65ae =================
It would be easy enough for me to drop the add-in, after which time would tell whether problems continue -- but I have a lot of underperforming queries to look at, and the add-in is so helpful that it's worth quite a bit of effort for me to try to resolve this.
Thanks!!

Thanks for posting the information.
We haven't seen any other issues like this. Could you try patching SSMS to the latest build (or at least to SP2) and see if it might be something MS has already taken care of?

Chris, are you saying you experienced this issue as well?

No but we are using this in a very limited fashion at this time. I always like to plan for problems if I see they exist with others. Chris

cfeied I'm also curious if you're using other add-ins, such as Mladen's SSMS Tools Pack? He recently fixed an issue where his code would crash SSMS if it was idle for 10 minutes... I'm not sure if it's the same application crash report but it just might be that you're blaming the wrong add-in. :-) If you are using his tools you should update to the latest version (2.0.3.0 at the time of my post), which fixes this issue.
